Dr Shamil Wanigaratne Dr Shamil Wanigaratne is a Clinical Psychologist and in 1996 together with Dr Athula Sumathipala co-founded the UK-Sri Lanka Trauma Group. He studied Psychology at the University of Nottingham and the City University London. Following postgraduate training he started his career in Clinical Psychology in 1987. He is at present Consultant and Head of Clinical Psychology in the Addictions Division of the South London & Maudsly NHS Trust. He is also Hon. Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, University of London, which incorporates the National Addiction Centre.
He has worked in the National Health Service in the areas of Substance Misuse and HIV and AIDS. He is particularly interested in clinical applications of cognitive behavioural theory. His publications include a book on Relapse Prevention and numerous chapters in books and papers in scientific journals. He is currently the Chair of the British Psychological Societys Special Interest Group in Addictions. He is also a board member of the Substance Misuse Advisory Service of the Department of Health. |
